The razor-tongued Simon Cowell — best known for his biting commentary and tough critiques on TV talent competitions like FOX’s American Idol — showed his softer side after donating more than $100,000 needed to help save a young girl’s life, according to London’s Daily Mail.

The American Idol star has signed a deal worth more than $100 million a year to bring X Factor — his A.I.-esque British series — to American TV, London’s The Daily Mirror newspaper reported Sunday.
Recently departed Idol judge Paula Abdul is in the running for on the show. Cowell will produce, but not appear on, the American version of the show.
The deal will also extend Cowell’s contract with Idol — which had been due to expire — for another two years.
A new report has surfaced claiming former American Idol judge Paula Abdul has issued a desperate plea for help to sometimes foe Simon Cowell after losing her job in a ill-fated cat and mouse game of numbers crunching with show producers.
“Paula really screwed up this time,” an Idol staffer tells Globe. “Her ego exploded and it cost her the best job she ever had. She’s lost without Idol.”
