The new year is off to a rough start for The Hangover actor Bradley Cooper.

The screen stud is mourning the loss of his dad. Charles Cooper, a stockbroker for Merrill Lynch, passed away after a lengthy illness on Saturday, PEOPLE has learned. He was 71.

Actress Renee Zellweger, who has been dating Bradley for more than a year, skipped her appearance at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards to comfort her beau.

Howard Stern isn’t the only big name star being bitten by the nation’s bedbug epidemic. The creepy crawlers — who plagued American households from New York to Ohio with little reprieve all summer — are now said to be moving in on Hollywood couple Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper.

The incognito pair were recently forced to throw out their mattress after it was attacked by bedbugs.
