“Publicly, Chuck and Julianne are saying the split was ‘mutual’ and they simply ‘needed some time apart, but the truth is that Chuck had been been using Julianne’s cell phone and discovered a slew of sexy text messages that she and Maks had been sending each other,” says the tipster, who asked not to be identified.

Chuck, 30, and Julianne, 21, met in August 2008 when they were both acts on Brad Paisley’s summer tour. The two fell in love almost instantly. The couple was later paired together for a season of fancy footing on the eighth installment of Dancing With The Stars. But it all went down hill for the lovebirds after Chuck, the once-promising “Stealing Cinderella” singer, fell into a career slump.

According to The Enquirer scoop, Chuck discovered the secret romance between Maks and Julianne when he used his girlfriend’s cell to make some emergency calls after the battery in his own phone died; that’s when he stumbled upon dozens of early morning, NC-17-rated text messages to Maks in Julianne’s call log.

Julianne broke down and confessed to the romance — saying that it began with Maks while she was in L.A., the tabloid writes. “It crushed Chuck,” says the tattle. “Julianne may look like an angel, but she’s a tough cookie. Chuck decided then and there to call it quits.”

“This was mutual,” a source told PEOPLE of the breakup. “They needed some time apart.”

Julianne, 21, met Chuck, 30, while on tour with Brad Paisley in 2008. The pair were later partnered together on the eighth season of ABC’s ballroom reality competition Dancing With The Stars, where Julianne once starred alongside brother Derek Hough as a featured series pro.

Both Chuck and Julianne are expected at the CMAs in Nashville on Wednesday night. Luckily, Julianne will have an active work schedule to keep her mind off her romance woes; the dancer is currently taking acting lessons to prepare for her role as “Ariel” opposite Chace Crawford in the movie remake Footloose, opening next summer.

Julianne can hardly wait for shooting to begin on the new movie, which is scheduled to go into production next March.

“I’m really excited about ‘Footloose,’” Julianne tells ET. “We’re still working out the nitty gritty details of scheduling and stuff, but I’m super excited. I feel like we have the best people working on it — Paramount, and Kenny Ortega, and the producers. So I’m getting really excited.”

Footloose is expected to hit theaters next July.

However, word is she Julianne been ordered to take acting lessons after she tanked an audition for the role of preacher’s daughter Ariel Moore in the film, which will star Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford.

Julianne’s audition “was so bad, the producers sent her off to take acting classes,” The Post reports. “She’s scheduled for another screen test Aug. 1. They definitely like her, but the producers know they need a real actress for the movie to work — she’s a pretty girl who can sing and dance, but so was Mariah Carey, and we all know how ‘Glitter’ turned out.”

Footloose opens in theaters in July of 2010.

Julianne has been tapped for the role of feisty preacher’s daughter Ariel Moore in the remake of the 1984 dance flick. The original film starred Kevin Bacon as a big-city kid who moves to a small town where dancing has been banned by an outspoken local minister, played by John Lithgow.

Footloose — directed by High School Musical lensman Kenny Ortega — expected to begin filming in March 2010 for a July 2010 theatrical release.

Last month, Dancing With the Stars pro Julianne Hough announced that she would be leaving the hit ABC show for one season to focus on her country singing career — which has gotten off to a strong start following the release of Julianne’s debut LP just last year.

On Monday, the bubbly blonde she released a statement assuring fans that she’ll be back in her dancing shoes by early next year.

“I am appreciative to be taking this coming season of Dancing with the Stars off to focus on my other career paths like touring in support of my album and recording my next one. I look forward to returning to DWTS in early 2010,” Julianne said in the statement to PEOPLE.

Ballroom champion Julianne Hough has confirmed that she will not appear on the upcoming eighth season of the ABC reality hit Dancing With The Stars next Spring; in fact, the aspiring country superstar says she may be quitting the show for good.

Julianne has decided to focus her attention on perfecting her music.

Julianne and her partner Cody Linley were eliminated fron the Season 7 semi-finals on Tuesday, wrapping up an eventful season that included a bout with endometriosis for Julianne.

“I won’t be on Dancing this spring season. I don’t know about the fall. Maybe, maybe not,” Julianne blogged Thursday. “We’ll see. I’m definitely going to focus on the music. My first album was a learning experience, and I can’t wait for the next one.”
