The former First Daughter, who plans to keep her part-time job as a sixth-grade reading resource teacher in Baltimore, will serve as The TODAY Show’s resident educational correspondent. Her first assignment was a feature on Dalton Sherman, a 11-year-old Dallas boy with a knack for public speaking.

After her segment, TODAY anchor Matt Lauer gave Jenna a high-five. “It’s nerve-wracking what she just did,” Lauer said. “You think about 6 million people watching you, and as they say, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. I think she did a great job.”

Hager, a 27-year-old teacher in Baltimore, will contribute TODAY stories about once a month on issues like education.

Tune in to TODAY on Friday, Sept. 18 to catch Jenna Hager’s first piece since joining the program. She will profile Dalton Sherman, an 11-year-old motivational speaker from Dallas.

Jenna, an elementary school teacher in Baltimore, will contribute about one story a month on issues like education to television’s top-rated morning news show, series executive producer Jim Bell announced on Sunday.

The 27-year-old daughter of former President George W. Bush has also authored two books. Bell said he got the idea after seeing Jenna in two TODAY Show appearances to promote her literary efforts. In 2007, Jenna appeared on the program to promote her book about an HIV-infected single mother, Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope. And she and her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, co-hosted an hour of TODAY when their picture book debuted.

“I think she can handle it,” says Bell. “I think she knows something about pressure and being under some scrutiny. When she came here for a handful of appearances [to promote her books], she knocked it out of the park.”

“It wasn’t something I’d always dreamed to do,” Jenna said in a statement Sunday. “But I think one of the most important things in life is to be open-minded and to be open-minded for change.”

Jenna will work out of NBC’s Washington bureau.

A lesbian wedding at the Bush ranch? First Lady Laura Bush and her recently-wed daughter Laura Bush-Hager appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday. As new wife Laura gushed on about her Mother’s Day Weekend nuptials at the family’s Crawford, Texas ranch, the newly-engaged Ellen playfully tried to secure the facility for her own forthcoming wedding to girlfriend Portia de Rossi.

Ellen said: “So, the ranch was a great place to get married – it looked like nobody could fly over and get pictures or bother you, really! So, can Portia and I borrow it for our wedding? Can we get the ranch?”

Jenna laughed and replied: “Sure!”
