Sex And The City: The Movie has topped the North American weekend box office, taking in $55.7 million in spite of earlier projections predicting the film would close out it’s opening weekend somewhere in the $25 million to $35 million range. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the long-awaited fourth installment of the action film franchise and last weekend’s box office winner, finished in second place, earning $46 million in ticket sales, according to early estimates.

Here’s how the box office Top Ten rounded out:

1. Sex and the City, $55.7 million.

2. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $46 million.

3. The Strangers, $20.7 million.

4. Iron Man, $14 million.

5. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $13 million.

6. What Happens in Vegas, $6.9 million.

7. Baby Mama, $2.2 million.

8. Speed Racer, $2.1 million.

9. Made of Honor, $2 million.

10. Forgetting Sarah Marshall, $1 million.

Sarah Jessica Parker and her Manolos are kicking Indiana Jones’ butt at the box office. Opening day ticket sales for Sex And The City Movie unseated last week’s box office champ, Indy 4; banishing the action epic to second place and setting a new precedent for “chick flicks.” Yay for Girl Power! The four fashionistas from New York City, who grew to fame between 1998-2004 on the wildly-successful HBO comedy, sold approximately $26.9 million in tickets in the U.S and Canada on its first day in theaters on Friday. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull followed with about $12 million, according to preliminary estimates issued on Saturday. Sex And The City is well on it’s way to refuting early projections by topping this Weekend’s Box Office.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull battled it’s way to the top of the U.S box office this Memorial Day Weekend, earning $126 million in it’s first four days of release. Indy 4, the franchise’s first film in nineteen years, witnessed a sixty-five-year old Harrison Ford in his signature role as archeologist Indiana Jones. The opening falls just $2 million short of the Memorial Day Weekend record set by Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End in 2007.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull star Shia LaBeouf appeared on the Live with Regis & Kelly video on Tuesday morning.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered to much fanfare at the 61st Cannes Film Festival on Sunday. The world premiere of the fourth installment of Indy, the first in 19 years, was the hottest ticket at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. The new globetrotting adventure finds archaeologist Indiana Jones battling Russians, led by actress Cate Blanchett, in a globetrotting adventure that once again may put the entire world at stake.
Star Jones, Natalie Portman, Dennis Hopper, Dean Cain, and Glodie Hawn were just a few of the Hollywood fixtures who swung by for a the World Premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Check out a few photos from the premiere.

Indy may be back in action, but the film failed to wow the crowd in Southern France. Christian Monggaard, who is reviewing the movie for Danish newspaper Information, called Crystal Skull an “overblown special-effects extravaganza.”

“Talk about a woman scorned,” Monggaard said. “A fan scorned is even worse.”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens Thursday.
