The Broadway revival of musical Bye Bye Birdie has been panned by New York’s theater critics – who have dubbed the John Stamos and Gina Gershon-starring revenue “boneheaded.”

Ouch.

The musical was a huge hit on stage in the 1960s, starring Dick Van Dyke in the lead role, but the new show opened a savage reception on Thursday’s opening night.

Stamos and Gershon were singled out for particular criticism from the New York Daily News, whose reviewer called them “surprisingly robotic.”

The New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli branded the pair “both look half-paralyzed by stress. Stamos’ face is frozen in a strained mask…and Gershon… is at sea as the feisty Rose Alvarez.”

The New York Times reviewer Ben Brantley, predicts the show will turn audiences off: “Theatergoers may feel an empathetic urge to rush home and bury their heads in their pillows.”
Bye Bye Birdie is scheduled to run at the Henry Millers Theatre through January.

John Stamos and Gina Gershon will star in the first Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie.

The 1963 musical, loosely based on Elvis Presley’s decision to join the Army, follows rock ‘n’ roll star named Conrad Birdie who is being drafted into the Army and the effect his departure has on the teenagers in a small Ohio town.

John will play the Conrad’s manager, Albert Peterson, and Gina will portray the manager’s secretary.

On Thursday, Roundabout Theatre Company artistic director Todd Haimes revealed that Birdie will open at one of its theaters this fall.

Showgirls star Gina Gershon appeared on Live with Regis & Kelly on Monday to dispel rumors that she’s been boinking former President Bill Clinton. Let’s all say it together: “He’s A Ho!”) In an eight-page spread about the former Commander-In-Chief, the chatty Pursham raises speculation that Bill may be boinking a divorced Canadian heiress as well as actress Gina Gershon, perhaps best known for her role in the 1995 film Showgirls. Gershon is currently starring in the Broadway production of Boeing Boeing.

Over the last few years, aides have winced at repeated tabloid reports about Clinton’s episodic friendship and occasional dinners out with Belinda Stronach, a twice-divorced billionaire auto-parts heiress and member of the Canadian Parliament 20 years his junior, or at more recent high-end Hollywood dinner-party gossip that Clinton has been seen visiting with the actress Gina Gershon in California.
