Robert Halderman will be arraigned on a first degree charge of grand larceny in a New York City courtroom on Friday, after he allegedly tried to extort late night personality David Letterman, The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a statement this afternoon.
The accomplished CBS News producer, 51, was indicted Friday for trying to shake down Letterman in a scandalous and sex-charged extortion plot. Halderman — who was required to pay his wife $6800 a month in child support and alimony — is accused of threatening to expose the funnyman’s affairs with several female staffers in a movie and book.

A producer for CBS’ 48 Hours newsmagazine was arrested Thursday for his alleged involvement in an attempted extortion plot against David Letterman, The Associated Press has learned.
During the taping of his CBS late-night show in New York Thursday, Letterman discussed receiving a threat to either pay $2 million or risk the relationships being made public.
AP sources identify the suspect as Robert J. Halderman. Halderman, who has been suspended by the network, is facing charges of attempted grand larceny after allegedly giving the Late Show host an ultimatum to pay up or risk having his affairs with female show employees be made public.
If convicted, Halderman faces 9-22 years behind bars.

President Barack Obama will visit CBS’ Late Show With David Letterman on Monday, Sept. 21, as part of a media blitz to promote his health care message to Americans.
Obama’s visit will make the first time a sitting president has ever visited the Late Show, CBS said in press release this afternoon. Obama has appeared on the late-night comedy five times in the past, mostly during his presidential campaign in September 2008.
The president will be the only guest on Monday’s Late Show.
