The Gossip Girl star “will kick off his Sunday shoes” in the iconic role of Ren McCormack in a new version of the 1984 classic, which begins shooting next year.

Chace tells Glamour Magazine: “We don’t start shooting until March, but I started getting into some training. I’m going to need the whole nine months to really get to where I need to be. I have some movement and I’m really happy to learn a lot of new stuff, but I’m counting on the magical editing to make me look really good! But they put me through a screen test, which was pretty rigorous, so I must have the foundation for it.”

The 23-year-old actor is set to star in the remake of 1984’s Footloose in the role made famous by Kevin Bacon.

The Gossip Girl star has landed the role of Ren McCormack after High School Musical star Zac Efron pulled out of the project earlier this year. Chace is undergoing grueling singing and dancing lessons to prepare for filming, which begins next year.

“It’s that Chace Crawford guy, right?” The Closer actress said in an interview with PEOPLE over the weekend. “We’re thrilled! [Daughter] Sosie is a big fan.”

“We met him at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. Kevin and he had a chat. He’s very sweet. He has big shoes to fill!”

In the original 1984 film, big city boy Ren moves to a small town where rock music and dancing has been outlawed by a local minister. Ren decides to get the laws changed and falls in love with preacher’s daughter Ariel in the process.

Zac Efron was “ecstatic” to learn that Gossip Girl hottie Chace Crawford has been chosen to replace him in Paramount Picture’s upcoming motion picture remake of Footloose.

“I’m ecstatic for him. We’re both in very different places and it just happened to work out. I think it’s gonna work out for the best.”

The 17 Again star — best known for his role as Troy in Disney’s High School Musical franchise — dropped out of the film earlier this year, citing fears that he would become typecast in musical roles.

Chace signed on to take over the role made famous by Kevin Bacon, after Zac Efron was forced to pull out, but Chace’s musical experience is limited, and director Kenny Ortega — who is choreographing Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Comeback Tour — admits he’ll need coaching before he’s ready to take on the role.

“He really sizzles. He has musicality. We need to work with him on music and dance. There are some big shoes to fill. But he has it in him.”

Footloose will begin filming next spring.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the Gossip Girl actor has inked a deal to “cut footloose” in Paramount’s revival of the 1984 film about a big town teen with fancy feet who moves to a sleepy town where dancing has been outlawed. Chace’s casting will see the 23-year-old actor stepping into the role of Ren McCormack, a character Kevin Bacon made famous 25 years ago.

Filming will begin in March. Footloose opens in June 2010.

Eh — I absolutely adored Footloose as a teenager, after first discovering it at 14. Since I am an “If it isn’t broke, why fix it?” kinda girl, I’m totally against remaking this movie. With that being said, it’s not likely that I’ll be gung ho about anyone that they cast in this calamity.
