Britney Spears is opening up about the passing of one of the nation’s most beloved television icons. Ed McMahon passed away in Los Angeles after a lengthy illness. He was 86.
The former product pitchman and Tonight Show announcer is best remembered to children of the ’80s and ’90s as the very well-dressed host of the TV talent competition Star Search – a gig that gave the star the opportunity to meet some of today’s biggest pop crooners before they were famous.
Britney Spears was one of them and the singer credits McMahon with giving her her “first shot” as an artist. A 10-year-old Britney appeared on the McMahon-hosted program in 1992, turning in a performance of “Love Can Build A Bridge.”
“I am deeply saddened by today’s news about Ed McMahon,” Britney tweeted Tuesday. “He is responsible for giving so many artists their first shot including myself. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.”

Word is Britney Spears is engaged to marry new man Jason Tranwick — who just so happens to be the pop tart’s agent.
Star Magazine Jason popped the question to Brit while they were on vacation in the Bahamas last month.
“He didn’t exactly get down on one knee, but Brit didn’t care. She said yes, and they opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate,” says an insider. “Jason held Britney for a long time and kissed her cheeks. They talked about their future for hours and didn’t go to sleep until after 3 a.m.! They just wanted to be alone together.”
We hear Britney Spears will be re-releasing her platinum-selling 2008 Circus album — with a couple of new songs added — to promote the upcoming second leg of her U.S. tour this fall.

Britney Spears is going down under for the first time.
This November, the pop princess will tour the Australian Outback for the first time in her career.
“I’ve wanted to tour Australia for quite some time and now it’s finally happening,” Britney said in an official statement. “My Circus tour is the best show I have ever created and I can’t wait to perform it for all of my Australian fans. See you guys soon!”
The Australian tour leg of Britney’s wrap up on November 24th at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

The snapping spies at News of the World have pulled the curtain off of more than a dozen never before seen photos of a topless Britney Spears. The semi-NSFW images were snapped nearly two years ago on the set of the pop princess’ 2007 “Gimme More” music video, insiders tell the tab.
