Tropic Thunder just took the wind out of Batman’s sails at the box office this weekend. The Ben Stiller-directed comedy, featuring Jack Black, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr. in Blackface, debuted at No. 1, taking in $26 million and bumping The Dark Knight to second-place after four weekends in the top spot, according to early studio estimates Sunday.
The film’s opening was made with bitter criticism from disablilty rights advocates who challenged its portrayal of people with disabilities.
