The FBI investigated Anna Nicole Smith as part of a plot to kill the son of her elderly tycoon husband, who was instrumental in keeping the former Playboy centerfold from getting her hands on his late dad’s multimillion dollar oil fortune.

Newly-released FBI files, obtained by The Associated Press, show the Bureau investigated Smith between 2000 and 2001 in a murder-for-hire plot targeting E. Pierce Marshall, who was at the center of a long legal fight to keep Smith, a former stripper from collecting J. Howard Marshall II’s estate. The younger Marshall has since died.

Anna Nicole Smith’s former companion Howard K. Stern and two doctors were charged Thursday with conspiracy to furnish Smith with drugs before she died in 2007 of an overdose.

The 40-year-old attorney was arrested in L.A. and booked. He was released on $20,000 bail.
