American Idol – Chubby Gets the Boot

Oh yes, another week where those who sucked the hardest are sticking around, while the person who had a mildly off-night, but is usually not too bad, gets bounced. Don’t worry, I’m not going to go off on another rant about how I can’t understand why folks are voting for the personality-challenged, but I really can’t.

Whatever. As usual, Ryan brought the bottom three contestants onto the stage; the first two being Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato. And I was hopeful, because they both deserved to be there. Then Ryan passed over Sanjaya (no suprise) and told Chris Sligh he was joining the Super Bland Duo onstage. Chris looked like he knew it would be him, but I had my fingers crossed even after Phil (and his ridiculous tilted railroad conductor hat) was sent back to safety.

Haley ended up being safe, and Chris’s mission of “Bringing Chubby Back” was sent down the shitter. He sang that Police song from last night again, and actually sounded much better, walking up to each Idol contestant and giving them a hug. He also accused Phil of owing him fifty bucks. Cocaine, you think? Or maybe crack? Mmmm, I dunno, Phil looks like a pill-popper to me. Probably trucker speed.

American Idol – Gwen Stefani Night

It was Gwen Stefani night and although only a few of the Idols sang No Doubt songs, overall the selection of songs was, well … interesting. The theme also included songs that inspired Gwen, so it was kinda like a mish-mosh.

Our two resident divas, Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle, both chose Donna Summer songs, which were absolutely perfect. Lakisha’s version of “Last Dance” was sassy and fun; it was great to see her do a more up-tempo song and dance around a little bit. She also looked fantastic, with her smooth sexy hair, but I wasn’t really loving the dress. The pattern was a bit too “busy.” Melinda sang “Heaven Knows,” which came out strong and convincing, as usual. Loved the cute flipped hairdo and satiny tunic with leggings; she looked young and fresh. Mu-ah! Big kisses.

Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey both chose Police songs, which were major mistakes if you ask me. Read the rest of this entry »

American Idol – Stephanie was Robbed!

Okay, people. There’s got to be some bad voodoo working for someone like Stephanie Edwards to get kicked off. She looked confident going down on the stage with Chris Richardson as the bottom two. Chris looked like he was about to shit himself, and then probably did when he was announced safe, and Steph looked stunned. I was stunned … shocked even. All I could think (and yell, I did yell at the TV) was “What the FUCK?”

She was good. One of the best. This just goes to show that AI is NO singing competition. If it was, Sanjaya, Haley, Phil, Chris Sligh and maybe even Gina would’ve been out the door way before Stephanie. But alas, it’s more about popularity and personality than talent, much like life itself, however sad that is to accept. At which point, the questions become WHO likes some of these bland contestants? HOW in god’s name are some of them so popular? Do some of them even HAVE personalities? Read the rest of this entry »

American Idol – Swingin’ 60’s

Last night the Idol contestants took on the sounds of the 1960’s British Invasion. And they were coached by Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits (was he the “Herman”?) and Lulu, who I’ve never heard of before, but she was super-cool. These songs were challenging for some who were unfamiliar with the songs, and for others who were unfamiliar with style of singing, but they each came out swinging, with the hopes of making it into the Touring Top 10.

Even those who’ve recently had stinky performances did a pretty good job with the 60’s tunes. Haley Scarnato was actually kinda okay. Not that she was great; she was nowhere near being all that and a bag of chips, but definitely at least the chips. She came out rockin’ a pair of super short-shorts and managed to keep the look kinda classy. I don’t know if it was the little bouffant with side-swept bangs hairdo (nice nod to 60’s style) or the satiny top or what, but she looked damn good. And she didn’t sound half-bad either! And there was a lot more energy coming from her tonight, which made a huge difference.

Chris Sligh wasn’t terrific again this week, but the song “She’s Not There” is hella difficult to sing. Taken that into consideration, he deserves some respect just for attempting it and not totally fucking it up. He also showed a bit more personality, coming out of the audience and hamming it up a bit for the camera. The performance part was great; he was quite entertaining. And the glasses are back! Woo hoo!

However, the shocker of the night was Sanjaya Malakar. Holy fucking shit, Read the rest of this entry »

American Idol – Brandon’s Last Dance

Well, I’m not going to fuck around today, because I’m pissed. Brandon Rogers got the boot last night. I know, I couldn’t believe it either. Especially when there were a couple of seriously sucky performances a billion times worse than his. Yeah, okay, he screwed up the words, and maybe he was concentrating on the dance moves a little too much. But goddamn, at least his voice sounded okay. Read the rest of this entry »

American Idol – All Together Now

This week, our Top 12 were lucky enough to be coached by the original Diva herself, Diana Ross. She is the epitome of fabulousness and still looks smashing, despite her advancing age. Her hair, much like her voice, is still the biggest in the business and she was thoughtful and accurate with her advice to our Idol wannabes. Unfortunately, terrific advice only goes so far and there were a few that even Ms. Ross couldn’t help. Read the rest of this entry »
