The American Music Awards were held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

Artist of the Year – Chris Brown

Kanye West won his first American Music Award on Sunday night.

“I’d like to thank everybody who accepted me trying to break new boundaries in music,” Kanye said as he accepted the award for Favorite rap/hip-hop album category for his Graduation album.

“It’s our responsibility as musicians to keep pushing each other, to keep competing with each other. It’s a really great competition,” Kanye told the audience. “I see artists like Beyonce and Alicia Keys and Rihanna and Chris Brown and Chris Martin all in the same room and we’re going to push this music to the point where it was like in the 1960s and ’70s where you talk about Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles. We will be the new Beatles. We will be the new Hendrix. They say in any other industry, you know, you’re supposed to do better than the past … but when you say, ‘I want to be Elvis,’ they say, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ Well, I wanna be Elvis.”

Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas took the stage to serenad hoards of adoring teen girls at the 2008 AMAs on Sunday night.

After taking a nasty spill and severely slicing his hand at the 2007 ceremony, Joe managed to avoid any life-threatening injuries this year.

Rihanna debuted her latest single, “Rehab,” in a live performance at the 2008 AMAs on Sunday night.

The islander also took home the trophy for Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B at tonight’s ceremony.

“This is the first year, I guess, the fans got to vote, so thank you mainly to my fans who voted for me,” Rihanna said upon accepting her statuette.

Mariah Carey was kissed on her hand by husband Nick Cannon as she performed at the 2008 American Music Awards in Los Angeles on November 23.

Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Julianne Hough, Taylor Swift, and Ashley Tisdale helped celebrate Miley Cyrus’ 16th birthday during the 2008 American Music Awards at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre on November 23.
