Captain Lou Albano Dead
Legendary pro wrestling manager Captain Lou Albano — known for his trademark rubber-banded goatee and funky Hawaiian shirts — died in Miami this morning, MTV.com has learned.
“One of the company’s most popular and charismatic legends,” World Wrestling Entertainment said in a statement Wednesday. “He will be greatly missed.”
The Captain is best known to non-wrestling fans as the father in Cyndi Lauper’s 1985 “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” video. He is also credited with pioneering the Rock ‘n Wrestling connection that launched the then-WWF to national prominence in the 1980s.
In 1989, Lou played Mario in the The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, a live-action children’s show based on the popular Nintendo video game. Later in life, the ringman struggled with his ballooning weight and suffered a heart attack in 2005.
Albano was sent home from the hospital earlier this week and place under hospice care after a long battle with an unidentified illness. He was 76 years old.
