Barbie is getting a new look. The iconic doll — who celebrated her 50th anniversary in 2009 — is dressed in a traditional head-to-toe burka in her latest incarnation. Burka Barbie is among more than 500 Barbie Dolls to be exhibited by Italian designer Eliana Lorena at the Salone dei Cinquecento, in Florence, Italy, this Friday.
The three dolls are dressed in traditional Islamic dress: one in a black garb with her face showing but her head wrapped; another in a orange-red, head-to-toe burka with a mesh peephole; and a third in a lime-green burka, again head-to-toe with her face covered. The exhibition and auction are sponsored by toy giant Mattel and London department store Southerby’s, but the Barbies were dressed by Italian designer Eliana Lorena, The Christian Science Monitor reported Tuesday.
“I know Barbie was something seen as bad before as an image for girls, but in actual fact the message with Barbie for women is you can be whatever you want to be….”
All proceeds from the auction of Burka Barbie and all the dolls from this week’s auction will benefit Save The Children.
No word whether Mattel will release the Burka Barbie for retail sale to the public.
