He CAN’T sing, and wouldn’t make it past the first round of American Idol.

The half-time show SUCKED!

How ’bout next time they get someone who can sing – to, uh, SING! The decision-makers seem to be in the habit of bringing on legends like Springsteen and McCartney, even though they’re well past their prime.

No matter how BIG they are or how great they were in their heyday, if they can’t sing NOW, they shouldn’t be headlining the SuperBowl.

I’m referring to the fact that on Youtube I’ve seen a lot of criticism from the “younger folk” about how THIS half-time “sucked” because Springsteen ain’t “NEW”. What are we, a bunch of Brits? It can’t be good, because it ain’t NEW?!! Someday, you won’t be new, either. You gonna like it that, just because you’re no longer 20 something, you SUCK?! Gimme a break.

It’s perfectly fine if you do not like Bruce Springsteen (I personally think he’s one of the greatest artists & performers of all time). I repeat: It’s fine. No one can appeal to everyone. But, please, if you’re going to dislike an artist — dislike *anything* — THINK ABOUT WHY. Think it through, THOROUGHLY, as an intellectual exercise. Don’t just hate someone — who is, by all OBJECTIVE measures, extraordinarily talented — because he isn’t a member of YOUR generation. That’s NO reason. E.g.: I LOVE Goodman, Sinatra, the Dorseys, and Shaw — and those guys were retired or dead before I was even born! That doesn’t mean they couldn’t be among the greatest musicians of all time!

I swear, people can no longer read, write, or THINK, Lord help us. Use this as an intellectual exercise: Why is Bruce Springsteen “bad”? And give me a reason other than he wasn’t born after 1982. You are entitled to an INTELLIGENT, well-thought-out opinion, but not an idiotic, ignorant one (“Everyone’s entitled to an opinion. Not everyone’s opinion is worthwhile” Think about it). It’s NOT enough to dislike an artist just because he isn’t NEW.

You’re right. He ISN’T “rap” or “hip-hop”. He actually has something to say, and he says it eloquently. He adds, if not beauty — though he does in many of his less-popular songs — at least insight, empathy, compassion and thoughtfulness, rather than merely reflecting ugliness.

Neil Young was wrong. Rock and roll DID die. It is no more. This current generation has no “rock” music, no matter what it thinks. It has non-melodic, primitive, ugly “rap”, very loud, non-melodic “something or other”, and we-all-sound-alike “pop”. If that’s what you like, fine. But you’re then in no position to judge a Springsteen, Neil Young, Mellencamp, et. al. because even when your ears pick it up, you don’t actually “HEAR” it, i.e., you don’t listen. Apparently because it isn’t NEW.

Well, well. Isn’t that a GREAT standard by which to judge? But then, we can’t expect standards from a people who have none.

Americans have become fools. With each passing generation, we’re dumber and dumber. By the time we reach the generation after this current one, we’ll be too stupid to breath and walk at the same time.
