Crank up your iPods, ‘Crunchers: With her X Factor future in doubt, aging pop princess Britney Spears is apparently eyeing a return to her bubblegum roots.

During a Twitter chat with her fans on Sunday, Spears confided that she’s “working hard” on a new album and “collaborating with some new inspiring producers.” The LP would be Brit’s first since Femme Fatale, which dropped in March 2011.

The move couldn’t come at a better time. Despite supplying us with more awkward facial expression memes to last a lifetime, Spears is expected to be ousted from her role as a judge on The X Factor USA for being “too boring.” After shelving out $15 million to land the 31-year-old star on the struggling talent show, boss Simon Cowell is reportedly none too pleased with her performance.

When asked by a fan if she had plans to exit the FOX reality singing competition, Britney replied:

“Really focused on my music right now.”

Simon is keeping mum on the subject, telling E!:

“I don’t know yet, to be honest with you. I haven’t had the conversation with her whether she’d want to, what other commitments she’s got.”
