Boyzone Singer Stephen Gately Dies
Stephen Gately, a singer with the Irish boy band Boyzone, died while on vacation in Spain this weekend, the group announced on Sunday.
The Irish pop star and actor made headlines when he came out as gay in 1999. Gately was on vacation in Majorca with his long-time partner Andrew Cowles on Saturday when he “tragically died,” according to a message on the band’s website Sunday.
He was 33.
“Stephen tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday with his partner Andrew in Majorca,” the statement read.
The circumstances surrounding Gately’s death remain unclear but it was reported he died after a night out.
Gerald Kean, a Gately family friend, says the the singer died of natural causes.
“There’s no foul play involved, and it’s not suicide. It’s just a tragic accident is what we’ve been told, and we’re happy that that is correct information,” Kean said. “There is nothing untoward. It’s not drugs, we don’t believe. It’s not suicide. It’s not murder. It’s not a fight. That’s what we’ve been told.”
