Beyonce Blackface Controversy
Beyonce in Blackface has some fans of the hitmaker making the “Gurl Puhleeze!” Face.
The “Sasha Fierce” siren is raising eyebrows and cries of racial insensitivity for appearing in Blackface in a photospread for a French fashion magazine.
Less than a week after the star raised suspicions that she’s been secretly lightening her skin, she’s copping flack for posing in the historically racially-disparging Blackface for a new issue of French magazine L’Officiel. In celebration of the magazine’s 90th anniversary, the songstress is featured on the cover of the African Queen-themed March issue. In a supposed return to her African roots, a heavily-darkened Beyonce pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian musician and pioneer, Fela Kuti. The cover shot shows her normal skin tone, but in several photos inside the mag, Beyonce’s face has been darkened with makeup.
A press release from the mag reads: “Far from the glamorous Sasha Fierce, the beauty posed for the magazine with amazing fashion designers’ clothes, but also in a dress created by her mother. [It is] A return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened.”
Well, we’re glad it wasn’t “involuntarily darkened!”
The Le’Officiel Collector’s Edition will hit newsstands later this month.
