Bette Midler Accuses Lady Gaga Of Stealing “Mermaid In Wheelchair” Act
The Divine Miss M just incurred the wrath of about a million Little Monsters.
Gaga courted controversy in Sydney last week after performing in a wheelchair as part of her live show. Dressed in a funereal black shroud, the singer wheeled herself on stage midway through the concert at Sydney’s Town Hall on Wednesday night. Made up to look frumpy and decrepit, the scene was reminiscent of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s famous entrance to the UK’s Reading Festival in 1992. Gaga’s latest stunt follows her entrance to the Grammy Awards in a giant egg and her arrival in a coffin at a UK festival earlier this year.
According to showbiz vet Bette Midler, Mother Monster last stunt isn’t exactly a figment of her imagination. Turns out Gaga’s mermaid-in-a-wheelchair routine is as original as the hook in “Born This Way” — Yep, another diva did it first! But for once, it’s not Madonna or Grace Jones Gaga is accused of — er — “borrowing” (Hint, Nudge, Wink…) inspiration from. The fierce Midler is claiming to have pioneered the controversial disabled aquatic combo!
The Beaches star took to Twitter to blast the pop queen for stealing her schtick:
“I’ve been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 – You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits – mermaid’s mine,” she Tweeted.
