What’s that we hear? Is Babs Walters ‘fessing up to tanking Ricky Martin’s pop career?
Walters sat down with the Ricky at the height of his dominance over the Billboard charts and went on a relentless campaign to force Ricky out of the closet. The veteran newswoman, 80, regrets trying to force the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” crooner to open up about his heavily-rumored homosexuality in a 2000 interview. It’s the one interview Barbara regrets in more than 50 year career in journalism, and she fears the “inappropriate” questioning may have had an adverse effect on Martin’s pop career in America.
“In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was. A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now I feel it was an inappropriate question,” she told The Toronto Star this month.
Martin, who is a single dad to twin sons conceive via surrogate, has never publicly commented on his sexuality.
We think it’s worth mentioning that just because Ricky is no longer a force on the American charts, it doesn’t necessarily mean his career is “over.” The ex-Menudo crooner continues to sell out concerts all over Latin America.
