The Colorado dad who touched off a massive search after claiming his son had floated off in a balloon apologized during his sentencing hearing in Fort Collins, Colorado. Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, including 60 days work release, for fabricating a story that his 6-year-old son had been carried off by a homemade balloon in October.
“I do want to reiterate that I’m very, very sorry.”
Heene — who masterminded the plot in hopes of landing a network reality series — was also prohibited from profiting from the wild goose chase that captivated the nation and cost taxpayers roughly $42,000. His wife Mayumi will be sentenced shortly.
The Heenes pleaded guilty last month to charges that they carried out the balloon stunt. The prosecutor urged the judge to hand out the maximum sentence, saying Richard Heene “wasted a lot of manpower and a lot of money in wanting to get himself some publicity.”
