Shots were just fired in what could shape up to be the most inneresting hip-hop feud since Kanye West took on Jimmy Kimmel.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis went head-to-head with “Poetic Justice” rapper Kendrick Lamar in four categories at this month’s annual Grammy Awards. In a move even devout hip-hop heads didn’t see coming, the duo came out with the gong each time.
It was such a sweep that Macklemore felt compelled to text Lamar and apologize. A screencap of the message was later uploaded to Macklemore’s Instagram page.
He wrote in part:
“You got robbed…I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much love”
Kendrick hasn’t publicly taken issue with Macklemore’s controversial “You Got Robbed” post-Grammys text apology, but Drake sure as sugar isn’t happy with the way things went down. And the most famous emcee to come straight outta Toronto has a candid assessment on Macklemore’s viral olive branch.
“That sh*t was wack as f**k,” Drizzy retorts in a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine. The one-time start of Degrassi: The Next Generation characterized Macklemore’s text as “cheap” and something that “didn’t feel genuine.”
“I was like, ‘You won. Why are you posting your text message?’ Just chill. Take your W and if you feel you didn’t deserve it, go get better — make better music.”
Drake also took Macklemore to task for only apologizing to Kendrick.
“To name just Kendrick? That sh*t made me feel funny. No, in that case, you robbed everybody. We all need text messages!”
Macklemore has yet to respond, but we’ve got a feeling, the “Thrift Shop” star won’t be silent for long.
