At least thirty people have been killed at Virginia Tech University in what has been called the dealiest campus shooting in American history.
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre (1,050-hectare) campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. (1115 GMT) at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
Police said they were still investigating the shooting at the dorm when they got word of the gunfire at the classroom building.
One student told Sky News of students “throwing desks and whatever they could to barricade the doors” as the shooter opened fire in the classroom building.
The suspect described as an Asian male is dead. Police were searching for a second gunman, though initial reports said this was a matter of routine. A unidentified man has been arrested, but it’s unclear what role he had in the shooting.
