Aretha Franklin “Interested” in Judging “American Idol”
Add the Queen of Soul to the growing number of vocalists/entertainers (Think Jerry Lewis and Mariah Carey) reportedly throwing her mic in the ring for a shout at a gig on American Idol.
Aretha Franklin has confirmed that she is interested in joining the judging panel of the TV talent show as a possible replacement exiting judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. Tyler and Lopez announced their departures from the Fox singing contest last week.
Franklin, an 18-time Grammy Award winner, sent an e-mail to CNN Saturday announcing her interest in the show. And get this: She wouldn’t mind bringing songstress Patti LaBelle along with her. In response to an email question asking Franklin whether she is interested in joining Idol as a judge or a mentor, the singer responded:
“Yes, I am interested as a judge!”
American Idol lost its top ratings spot this year to NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Additionally, rival singing contests like Fox’s The X Factor and NBC’s The Voice have sliced into Idol’s ratings.
Could Miss Ree help the ratings slide?
