According to 2008 AKC registration statistics released on Wednesday, the Lab is by far the most popular dog in America.

“The Lab is a very versatile breed that does a number of jobs very well, it’s a lovely hunting companion, it’s easily trained and very adaptable so it makes a good family companion and its loyalty is a big factor as well,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson.

The low maintanence bulldog came in at No. 2

“It’s a dog that doesn’t require a lot of exercise and adapts to a lifestyle that is more indoors, and they’re clowns. They have a great personality, just look at them and you love them, all those wrinkles,” Lisa added.

The Top 10 dogs are ranked as follows: Labrador Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier, German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever, Beagle, Boxer, Dachshund, Bulldog, Poodle, and Shi Tzu.

The American Kennel Club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
