American Idol - Girls Bring it Back!
If the boys threw it down Tuesday, than the girls picked it up and shoved it up their asses Wednesday night, because they were fucking great. Well, some of them were great. To be exact, six of them were great and the other four sucked butt.
Gina opened the show, looking slinky (but not slutty) in a lovely red satin dress. She dedicated Heart’s “Alone” to her boyfriend, who’s been her rock and even dyed his hair red to match hers. Okay, that’s a little dumb, but whatever. Her performance was on-point and I was pleasantly surprised that she could hit those high notes towards the end of the song. Girl’s got some range after all. Very nice.
One of the 2 surviving members of the “generic girl club,” Alaina Alexander, dedicated her song to her mom, who worked like 4 jobs to support the kids. Alaina chose a Dixie Chicks song, “Not Ready to Make Nice.” It was a fucking mess, the whole thing. Simon said she “ran out of steam” halfway through, I’d say she never had enough steam to do this song in the first place. She moved like a Barbie robot, marching in place, stiff arm gestures, blank expression on her face. It was kinda scary … scary bad.
So then Lakisha Jones stepped up and blew everyone away with her version of “Midnight Train to Georgia,” dedicated to her grandmother, who’s 90-something and has an old-lady crush on Ryan Seacrest. Aw. This song was another Paris Bennett tune, but Lakisha made me forget all about that, because she took it in and twisted it around and belted out something that was completely new and wonderful and definitely her own. Performing at this caliber just looks so EASY for her! As for her outfit, I thought she looked terrific. Simon didn’t like the bright color of her top. So fucking what? No matter what this girl puts on her body, her voice is amazing, and some stupid orange shirt can’t take away from that.
Melinda Doolittle dedicated “My Funny Valentine” to her two closest friends, who are functioning as her voice coach and stylist while she’s on AI. Melinda said she hates to shop and would look a “hot mess” if those two didn’t keep her in check. Well, they’re doing a helluva job, because she looked sharp in a black suit and red shirt. I think it was Constantine who did this song before, but he mucked it up with those “googly eyes into the camera” thing he always did. I was speechless while Melinda was singing this; it was incredible. She’s just a pro, pure and simple. It was a perfect performance.
Okay, so at this point in the show I’m rethinking my opinion of Gina, because after hearing Lakisha and Melinda, Gina doesn’t sound so good anymore. I mean, she was good, but those two were outstanding.
Then our annoying Antonella Barba came out to sing what? A Celine Dion song? Is she out of her fucking mind? I think she may have a slight narcissistic personality disorder, because her song choices indicate an inflated idea of what she’s capable of singing. I mean, she was totally out of tune with the music. And her dress was fucking hideous, like some psychedelic 60’s wallpaper. Oh, and did anyone see the porn pics of her sucking cock?
Jordin Sparks saved us from the disaster that was Antonella, by singing “Reflection” for her little brother, PJ. She looked beautiful in a perfect blue dress and sounded even more beautiful. I think Paula is right on the money about Jordin, because I agree that she seems to be a genuinely good person, with a heart of gold. I adore this chick.
Stephanie Edwards dedicated her performance of “Dangerously in Love” to her parents, who pushed her to audition for AI in the first place. Personally, I didn’t recognize the song, but it seemed difficult to sing, and Stephanie handled it like a pro. She looked gorgeous, but perhaps a bit overdressed. The floor-length gown kinda looked like a prom dress, and the slit was dangerously high, threatening to play panty-peek-a-boo. Her voice was strong and smooth, and her mark was definitely made here.
Once again, Leslie Hunt’s choice of outfit had me a bit confused. One of the staff stylists really should have pulled her aside and explained that high boots don’t go with calf-length leggings. Ballerina flats, honey. Go for the ballerina flats. And please, if Leslie sticks around for next week, someone give her another color to wear. Boring brown two weeks in a row? We’ll remember her as the girl who always wore shit-colored outfits. Anyway, she dedicated “Feelin’ Good” to her late grandpa Bob, who she said would be so proud of her. Mm, I wasn’t proud. It wasn’t very good. And the scatting in the middle was irritating. She sounded like a doofus. If you can’t do it up like Blake, don’t fucking do it at all.
And Christ almighty, how the fuck did Haley Scarnato make it this far? I thought she sucked hard last week, but this week … what a goddamn mess. She sent her performance of “Queen of the Night” out to her fiancé, Bobby, who apparently is not dealing well with being away from her. Well, Bobbo, I’m sure you’ll get her back real soon, because she’s awful. Whitney? Why the hell would she try Whitney? When she tanked doing Celine last week, you’d think she’d catch the hint that “big voice songs” are not for her. She doesn’t have a big voice. She looked cute, but sounded horrific.
After these couple of stinkers, Sabrina Sloan wrapped things up with a hot version of “All the Man That I Need,” dedicated to grammy. Grammy’s hilarious and glamorous, but’s been in the hospital recently. I’m sure Sabrina’s electric performance will give Grammy a kickstart, because it sizzled. Take note Haley, THAT’S the way to do Whitney. She looked fantastic too, all smiles and moved like a stealthy cat.
Compared to the big voices in the mix, Haley, Alaina, Leslie, and Antonella don’t have a fighting chance. Two of the four are going home. Then the next two will be outta here next week. Honestly, there’s not a whole lot they can do about it. They just aren’t good enough.
