Alice in Wonderland opened to a record-setting $210 million this weekend. Who saw it?
Despite garnering several poor reviews, director Tim Burton’s 3D update of the Lewis Carroll fairytale sold $210.3 million in tickets worldwide this weekend. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada contributed $116.3 million, the sixth-biggest opening weekend ever, according to research firm Box Office Mojo.
Setting a record for 3D films, Alice is now the best debut of Burton’s career, surpassing the $68.5 million opening weekend for his 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. The Disney release attracted an even bigger opening than that of the Oscar-nominated 3D feature Avatar.
