Agassi says goodbye to tennis
Agassi played his last professional tennis game this weekend- retiring (as planned) from the game after 21 consecutive tournaments over his career. In his final match, Agassi competed against and lost to German Benjamin Becker. Agassi then collapsed into his courtside chair and with his eyes welling up with tears, looked up to see the crowd of 20,000 standing and cheering for him.
Agassi walked to the center of the court, took a bow, and said to the crowd “The scoreboard said I lost today, but what the scoreboard doesn’t say is what I have found. Over the last 21 years, I have found loyalty. You have pulled for me on the court and also in life. I have found inspiration. You have willed me to succeed, sometimes even in my lowest moments, and I’ve found generosity. You have given me your shoulders to stand on to reach for my dreams, dreams I could never have reached without you.”
I’m not totally into the tennis scene but I still know all about Andre Agassi. It’s gonna be strange without him since he’s been in the game for as long as I can remember. I’d expect him to stay involved in the game somehow other than playing, but he sounds like he’s saying goodbye for good. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
