The accomplished CBS News producer, 51, was indicted Friday for trying to shake down Letterman in a scandalous and sex-charged extortion plot. Halderman — who was required to pay his wife $6800 a month in child support and alimony — is accused of threatening to expose the funnyman’s affairs with several female staffers in a movie and book.

“Our concern here is extortion, and that’s what we’re focusing on,” Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said this afternoon.

Letterman, who recently married girlfriend of 23 years Regina Lasko, copped to affairs with several female staffers on his late-night show Thursday night after Halderman, an Emmy-winning producer on the CBS newsmagazine 48 Hours, tried to blackmail him about the affairs.

“The defendant Robert Joel Halderman, a.k.a. Joe Halderman, [who] is 51 years old of Norwalk, CT, was indicted on an attempted grand larceny charge. The crimes charged in the indictment occurred between September 9th and September 30th of 2009,” the D.A.’s statement reads.

Halderman, who reportedly once lived with a woman who worked for Letterman, allegedly sent the talk show host a package a few weeks ago threatening to out his indiscretions. He was arrestedoutside the CBS offices on West 57th street Thursday and will be arraigned today in state Supreme Court.

“The investigation leading to today’s indictment reveal[s] that Halderman waited outside Letterman’s Manhattan home at 6 a.m. on September 9th to deliver a letter and other materials to him as he was leaving for work,” the release continues.

“Halderman wrote that he needed to ‘make a large chunk of money’ by selling Letterman a so-called ‘screenplay treatment.’ The one page screenplay treatment attached to the letter referred to Mr. Letterman’s great professional success and … his ‘beautiful and loving son.’ The document then related that Mr. Letterman’s ‘world is about to collapse around him’ as information about his private life is disclosed leading to a ‘ruined reputation’ and severe damage to his professional and family lives.” the District Attorney adds.

“The package contained other materials supporting the screenplay treatment and directed Mr. Letterman to call him by 8 a.m. to make a deal. Mr. Letterman immediately contacted his attorney, who arranged an initial meeting with Halderman. During this initial meeting, Halderman demanded to be paid 2 million dollars to avoid the disclosure of the private information in his so-called screenplay treatment…..A search warrant was executed in Connecticut yesterday and the investigation is continuing.”
