In Hollywood, a kilt is quite the fashion statement. As a piece of traditional Scottish dress from the 16th century, this pleated men’s skirt is most often worn nowadays by Scottish dudes during formal occasions, but every once in a while, someone famous will bust one out for reasons known only to them and whatever god they worship.
Though it’s not entirely uncommon to see a Scottish actor rocking a kilt on the red carpet, other celebrities seem to co-opt the style here and there just for fun. The public is largely divided on the kilt, with some claiming that they never really go out of style and others finding them kind of silly, to say the least.
Even though you’re only ever likely to run into a kilt-clad Scotsman at a wedding of some kind, countless celebrities wear them to awards ceremonies, red carpet events, and sometimes just as a part of their act. Many on this list can indeed point to their Scottish heritage to justify wearing it whenever they feel like it while others seem to put one on for no apparent reason whatsoever.
Here are 15 famous guys who wore a kilt at one time or another for no apparent reason whatsoever.
15. Snoop Dogg
Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion, or just Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., if you like, famously rocked a blue plaid kilt when he hosted the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards at the Olympiahalle. The 44-year-old rapper and actor accompanied the kilt with a large buckle (emblazoned with his name), knee-high black socks, blue Chuck Taylors and a cane.
As to why he wore the kilt in the first place, well … no man can say.
14. Samuel L. Jackson
Samuel L. Jackson has worn kilts several times throughout his career, most notably in the 2001 Canadian-British action-comedy The 51st State where he played Elmo McElroy, a pharmacologist and drug designer. He must have been taken with the design and … uh … “freedom” of the kilt because he has worn one several times since for red carpet events and photo ops.
A fan of Scotland, Samuel L. has admitted that he actually owns several kilts, presumably to bust out whenever he’s feeling a little squirrely.
13. Donald Trump Jr.
The son of Donald Trump (yes, that Donald Trump) is an American businessman and heir to the Trump empire. He also wore a kilt to walk the runway at the 8th annual “Dressed To Kilt” Charity Fashion Show New York City in 2010. Why? No idea. But when you’re Donald Trump’s son, there aren’t a whole lot of options if you want to out-crazy your own dad.
12. Vin Diesel
Vin Diesel wore a black leather kilt all the way back in 2003 for the MTV Europe Music Awards, and was even photographed “swishing” it (if that’s what you’d call it) on the red carpet. Whether he was just trying to fit in a little better across the pond is unknown, but his appearance might have sparked a minor trend, because he certainly wasn’t the last to wear one.
11. P Diddy
Sean Combs (AKA P. Diddy) is a hip-artist, producer and businessman, and probably one of the most powerful moguls in music. He also wore a kilt for a performance in Glasgow back in 2010. Sure, this one was probably part of his performance, and at least he was in-country. The same can’t be said for …
10. Kanye West
Kanye performed at a Hurricane Sandy benefit in 2012 wearing a Vin Diesel-style black leather kilt, and has not been able to live it down since. He famously asked Getty Images to remove all photos they had of him wearing the Givenchy kilt, but later defended his use of it, arguing that he was a fashion icon and that a kilt is a symbol of a warrior. Hey, he’s not wrong.
9. Kid Cudi
Rapper Kid Cudi is one of the most prolific and influential recording artists alive today. When you accomplish as much as he has, you try to find ways to shake things up now and again. Back in 2010, he was also photographed wearing a kilt and a New Year’s Eve party in Miami. Again, for no apparent reason.
8. Al Roker
Most of the names on this list are actors, musicians, etc., and are expected to take some fashion risks and set some trends. Point is, it’s not entirely unexpected to see them on the red carpet wearing something like a kilt for no reason. But weatherman Al Roker? That’s pretty unexpected. Another “Dressed To Kilt” entry, the 61-year-old rocked a blue kilt and as usual, didn’t seem to understand why he was there.
7. Ashton Kutcher
Ashton Kutcher was photographed wearing a camo-patterned kilt is Los Angeles back in 2006. For a guy who starred in My Boss’s Daughter, Guess Who, What Happens in Vegas, Valentine’s Day, Killers, New Year’s Eve, Jobs and The Ranch, wearing a kilt is hardly the most questionable choice he’s ever made.
6. Adam Lambert
Despite finishing second on season 8 of American Idol, Adam Lambert is one of the show’s most successful alums. During a 2010 tour, Lambert stopped in Scotland for a show and decided to don a black kilt to mark the occasion.
5. Ewan McGregor
Ewan McGregor wears kilts constantly. He’s actually Scottish, so while it’s appropriate for him to wear kilts during formal events (like we said above), he doesn’t waste a single opportunity to put one on … well … whenever he seems to feel like it. He wore one when he received his OBE medal in 2013 (read: appropriate time to wear a kilt) but also occasionally combines one with a leather biker jacket just to stroll around town smoking cigarettes for the paparazzi (read: slightly more questionably appropriate time to wear a kilt).
4. Gerard Butler
Another Scottish actor who can basically get away with wearing a kilt whenever he wants is 300 star Gerard Butler. He has worn kilts numerous times, on-screen and off, usually at premieres (see: Law Abiding Citizen Scotland premiere in 2009) and 2005’s “Dressed To Kilt” during which he brandished a sword as he walked the runway.
3. Damien Woody
NFL New York Jets player Damien Woody wore a kilt in 2009 to celebrate New York’s Tartan Week, and was photographed in his jersey walking the runway at the 7th annual “Dressed To Kilt” event. At the end of the stage, he squatted down, which we wouldn’t recommend given that a lot of people who wear kilts tend to go commando.
2. Faizon Love
Actor and comedian Faizon Love rocked a kilt at a golfing event once. The photo above is the best one we can find of him, even though it looks like he’s about to drop a deuce on the green. Remember what we said about going commando under those things?
1. Mike Myers
Mike Myers is another guy who wears kilts a lot. The Canadian actor has participated in several “Dressed To Kilt” events, and has worn full Scottish regalia at several awards and red carpet events over the years. He has played a number of Scottish characters in his career, and does have Scottish ancestry in his background. He’s probably also the only guy on this list to be photographed with Sean Connery … three times … while wearing a kilt.
