Friends has been called one of the best comedy TV shows of all time and its syndication continues on multiple channels, including the recent ability to stream it on Netflix.
As a result, many people have gone back to watch old episodes and might have caught things that they didn’t notice the first time or recognized a famous actor as a guest star that they did not know about before.
After 10 seasons on the show, the series provided plenty of time to display a wide array of guest stars for different types of roles including screen legends and others who became famous after their time on Friends.
Here is a list of 10 of the memorable famous guest stars that appeared on Friends:
During his multiple-episode arc on the series, Bruce Willis played the character Paul Stevens during season 6. His character created all sorts of trouble on the show as the father of Ross’ young girlfriend. After that, met Rachel and started to date her, which obviously created quite the tension between the two, including double dates where Ross had to watch him kissing Rachel.
In one of the great guest starring roles on the show, Reese Witherspoon played a sister of Rachel’s. She appeared in 2 episodes of season 6 and even took a romantic interest in Ross. This, of course, didn’t work out too well for the two of them since everyone knows you don’t date your sister’s love ex’s. She was funny on the show and the appearance came years before any of her Oscar nominations.
He might be one of least known to the public of the best famous guest stars, but his part on the show was definitely one of the best. Adam Goldberg is primarily known for his independent films and appeared as Chandler’s annoying roommate Eddie for a brief time during season 2. It was during a time when Chandler and Joey were fighting and Joey was forced to move out, appearing in 3 episodes and even refusing to move out, despite not getting along with Chandler.
One of the earliest of the big guest stars to appear on the show, Jon Lovitz was only in one episode and appeared briefly as a restaurant owner who might hire Monica as the new chef at his restaurant. She was having a trial run of cooking for him when he came to the apartment, and as Phoebe pointed out when he walked in, he was clearly high, which made for a few hilarious scenes with the comedy legend. He also appeared in one episode in season 9 when going on a date with Rachel.
Billy Crystal And Robin Williams
The two comedy legends had a brief time on the show like some others, but certainly made the most of it. Billy Crystal and the late great Robin Williams appeared in a season 3 episode called “The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion.” They joined a crowded Central Perk couch and continued to talk over the Friends gang with Williams getting incredibly emotional and storming out of the coffee shop saying that they are not friends anymore.
Freddie Prinze Jr.
Although he has mostly quit acting in recent years, Freddie Prinze Jr. was still a pretty big deal when he appeared as a guest star in one episode of Friends. He was in an episode of season 9 toward the end of the series in the episode “The One With The Male Nanny.” He played Sandy, a nanny hired to help take care of Emma, Ross and Rachel’s daughter, who seemed to have more success with her than they did.
Anna Faris and Jim O’Heir
Throughout season 10, Anna Faris is seen in the role of Erica, the woman who is giving up her baby for adoption to Chandler and Monica. She appeared in a total of 5 episodes, the most important of which being “The One With The Birth Mother,” the first episode that introduces her to the show. In addition, a brief role in that episode is played by Jim O’Heir who may still not be known by name, but who played Larry/Gary/Jerry Gergich on Parks and Recreation.
Although his roles have changed slightly over the years, Ben Stiller is one of the best comedy actors of our generation. He appeared in one episode of Friends, and due to his crazy character, he probably wouldn’t have last much longer. In his guest starring role, he played Rachel’s date who irrationally screams at anyone who bothers him in an episode titled “The One With The Screamer.”
His guest starring role was perhaps one of the best, in part because, well it was Brad Pitt, and he also related to multiple characters in one of the classic Thanksgiving episodes. In the season 8 episode, he plays Will Colbert, an old friend who went to high school with Rachel, Ross, and Monica. There was tension between them and as the night went on, he revealed that he was a member of the “I Hate Rachel Green Club” in high school, where he and its only other member, Ross, spread a rumor that Rachel has both male and female reproductive parts.
George Clooney and Noah Wyle
They are both featured as doctors in the first season, in a way reprising the roles in which they played on the long-running drama ER. They are featured as ER doctors who tend to Rachel, although she doesn’t have insurance, causing Monica to sign her name on the forms and the two of them switch identities for the time that they know the doctors. They are featured in a two-part episode in season 1 when Rachel and Monica attempt to keep the identity swap going during a double date.
